I cannot predict whether I will continue to post here regularly, so I used the pleasant noncommittal subjunctive “might”.
What does not motivate me to blog?
- I don’t blog to make money. I do like to make money, but I don’t expect to do so through blogging. I will play with revenue generating systems, but only to gain first-hand experience with them.
- I won’t blog to convince people that I’m right. Some who have seen my critic side might think that I believe my ideas are better than everyone else’s ideas. My wording may be perceived as stating universal truth, but I know that all I’m stating are my opinions.
What motivates me to blog?
- I have wisdom to impart. [see above about not always being right]. I think Fred Wilson stated it well. I’m a believer in the concept that experiences shape one’s learning, and I’ve had a variety of them. Mostly, I know how to make software, but I’ve learned many things over the years that only tangentially relate to software.
- I like meeting new people. This can be an electronic form of meeting or old-school style. I enjoy knowing a variety of people, though it does tend to cluster in the bucket of over-educated. I find that I often learn something from every new acquaintance I make.
- I like helping others. Just as I learn from new acquaintances, I hope that new acquaintances learn from me [see also: I have wisdom]. Another great way to help others is just to introduce people who would otherwise not have met, which is much easier when you know a wide variety of people.
- I might need to vent. I won’t be flame-baiting, and I won’t be claiming that I’m omniscient or omnipotent [see also: because I am always right]. Sometimes I see things that I feel need to be stated and aren’t being stated. On rare occasions, I might even have an original insight hidden in a rant.
Things I will try to avoid:
- Ranting. I said I would do it, but I’ll try not to unless I can add value.
- Repeating the news or other blogs, unless I can add value.
